A Perilous Night on Mount Shasta
In 1875, after only a half dozen years of mountaineering, Muir’s confidence in his abilities could not be better demonstrated than in his several ascents of the 14,142 foot Mount Shasta. On this particular “perilous night,” in the midst of his agonizing discomfort, it’s striking that he found himself contemplating the beauty of the stars as the storm cleared. The “frost-nipping” suffered on his feet resulted in a slight limp noticeable in his old age.
